Seung Myeong Oh (KR)
Seung Myeong Oh is the percussionist with infinite potentiality that embodies various repertories and creative ideas coming from the never-stopping challenge. Currently, Oh is the Principal Timpanist of the Jeju Philharmonic Orchestra, leader of the Oh Percussion Group and Oh Junior Percussion Ensemble Music Director, member of the executive committee of Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival and Jeju International Brass & Percussion Competition, ADAMS artist and a lecturer in Jeju National University for the future potential percussionists. Oh obtained his Bachelor degree of Percussion at the Chugye University for Arts. Starting 2006 he shaped his musical talent in the class of marimba virtuoso Ludwig Albert at two Belgian leading universities and obtained with greatest distinctions a master marimba degree and a postgraduate degree in concert soloist at the Royal Conservatorium in Antwerp and a master degree with great distinction for chamber music at the Lemmens Institute in Leven.
As the first prize winner of the Sacheon International Percussion Competition, Oh received Grand Prix and was recognized as the first Korean marimbaist in winning the 6th International Percussion Competition in Italy. He was praised as the sound, charismatic marimba player with outstanding musical sense that drew everyone’s attention. As result, in 2010, he was selected by the ADAMS, Netherland, as the professional percussion artist who’s name and career was firmly established since then. When Oh graduated the universities in Belgium, he got the greatest distinction, honor of performing the Royal Conservatorium Antwerp’s ‘Prologue’ in The International Performing Arts Center-De Singel. Beginning with this, he started to build up his music career: Embassy of Belgium for the Concert of Marimba (Residence Palace in Brussels), ‘Love Art Gallery’ organized recital (Antwerp in Belgium), and many more in Europe, his live and broad percussion performance and career stays active even today.
For example, Oh was invited to 5th International Percussion Festival Bjelovar in Croatia and Cremona Summer Festival in Italy as the marimba artist to perform the magnificent play that received huge applauds. Moreover, he worked as a lecturer for Ludwig Albert International Marimba Academy in Portugal and Belgium and was nominated as a judge for 2015 International Percussion Youth Competition, Belgium. In upcoming July 2020 especially, it is the 20th Anniversary of the 8th Belgium Universal International Marimba Competition when Seung Myeong Oh will be the first judge for the great event. As for Oh’s works in South Korea and in Asia, he was chosen by the Choseon Ilbo Company to perform his debut concert in Sejong Cultural Center, Seoul. Afterward, he performed a percussion recital at Kumho Young Artist Concert series and as a soloist at Chugye University for the Arts an alumni concert (Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall), Homecoming solo recital (Seoul Arts Center Recital Hall), and 7th Pyeong Chang Music Festival. Furthermore, as he gained good reputation as the professional percussion soloist, he was invited to perform at the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival together with Ludwig Albert for Double Concerto in 2010, perform at the Rangsit University (Thailand) and establish percussion master class in 2011, and also both the ABPDA Singapore Closing Ceremony Concert (with Jeju Wind Orchestra) and Yangzhou City (China) Special Concert (with Jeju Philharmonic Orchestra) were performed in 2012. In February 2019, at the 1st Thailand International Percussion Competition, Seung Myeong Oh was the judge.
